Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement. It is estimated that roughly 1 million people in the United States are living with Parkinson’s, and more than 10 million people worldwide. Although there is no known cure for this debilitating disease, there are treatments available to help patients manage their symptoms. Let’s take a closer look at what Parkinson’s Disease is and how it can be managed.

What Causes Parkinson's Disease?

The exact cause of Parkinson's Disease is unknown, but scientists believe that it is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Scientists have identified several genes which may increase an individual's risk of developing the condition, but they do not appear to be the only cause. Additionally, research suggests that certain environmental toxins may also contribute to the development of Parkinson's Disease.

Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease

The most common symptom of the disease is trembling or shaking (tremor) in one or both hands, arms, legs, or face. Other symptoms include stiff muscles; slow movements; difficulty walking; impaired balance; voice changes; and difficulty writing or speaking clearly. These symptoms generally worsen over time as the disease progresses and can make day-to-day activities increasingly difficult for those affected by it.

How to Manage Symptoms

There are several ways that individuals can manage their symptoms and live a healthy life with Parkinson's Disease. Medication can help reduce tremors and improve coordination, although it may take some trial and error before finding the proper medication regimen that works best for each individual patient. Physical therapy has also been proven to help improve mobility in those with PD. Exercise can also help keep muscles strong while improving coordination, balance, and flexibility. Additionally, a balanced diet filled with vitamin-rich foods can help keep energy levels up throughout the day while providing essential nutrients needed for overall health and well-being. Finally, stress management techniques such as yoga, massage therapy, breathing exercises, and meditation can all provide relief from anxiety associated with PD so individuals can focus on managing their daily lives without feeling overwhelmed or anxious about their condition.


Parkinson’s Disease is a severe neurological disorder that affects millions of people around the world every year. Though there currently isn’t a cure for this debilitating condition, there are treatments available to help patients manage their symptoms so they can lead productive lives despite having PD. By combining medication with physical therapy, exercise, proper nutrition, and stress management techniques such as yoga and meditation, individuals diagnosed with PD will be able to better cope with this challenging condition so they can continue living happy healthy lives despite having this chronic illness. By taking care of themselves through proper self-care practices such as these they will be able to better manage their symptoms while continuing on with day-to-day tasks without feeling overwhelmed or anxious about their condition due to managing PD in a way that works best for them individually!
